Ежедневная газета. Считается наиболее влиятельной и информированной в стране. Придерживается прогрессивных взглядов и славится достаточно беспристрастной оценкой событий. Издается в г. Нью-Йорке компанией "Нью-Йорк таймс" [New York Times Co.]. Основана Г. Реймондом [Raymond, Henry J.] в 1851, в 1896 перешла в собственность А. Окса [Ochs, Adolph Simon], чьи потомки и сейчас контролируют ее. Тираж более 1,1 млн. экз. (1992). В газете сотрудничали многие известные журналисты. Сотрудники газеты получили большое число Пулитцеровских премий [Pulitzer Prize]. Выходит несколько приложений [New York Times Book Review; New York Times Magazine]. Газета сыграла важную роль во многих политических событиях страны и в отстаивании свободы печати [free press clause]. Девиз газеты: "Все новости, достойные печати" ["All the news that's fit to print"]. В 1992-94 выходила на русском языке в Москве в виде еженедельного издания. С сентября 1997 выходит как цветная газета. Получила прозвище "Седая старушка" [Old Grey Lady].
